The Good Times Still Rollin’ A Decade Later
The Shed Bar is an institution on the Leeds Rock and Indie scene and this year sees it welcome in its 10th Anniversary. First opening its doors in December 2008, the concept of the bar was the brainchild of Richard Hawley and Matthew Jones, best friends from their schooldays (and more recently Best Men for one another).
The Shed Bar has a unique personality, providing beautiful wood surroundings under a captivating exposed-brick railway arch, with an electric atmosphere provided by the fabulous array of modern rock and indie songs blended with classic rock ‘n’ roll.
It was this stunning layout that captivated Rich and Matt, who explain that the acoustics provided by the archway are what captures the unrivalled atmosphere on the busy and bustling nights. “It is possible to hear trains rumbling overhead, but there has to be a break in the rocking playlist to have any chance of witnessing that” states Matt.
The variety of drinks has always been important, with a huge range of spirits, world beers, real ales and specialist cocktails that are updated regularly by the management team. They also stock a vast range of vintage and exclusive single malt Scotch whiskies – including the ultra rare Macallan 1958 25yo Anniversary Malt which retails at around £9k a bottle!!
Rich & Matt believe a key component to the success of the bar is creating healthy working relationships with a low turnover of staff. “The team we have at The Shed are incredibly tight nit, whilst the Manager, Mikey Crimmons, has been with us over 8 years and must take a lot of credit for the progression and stability that he has enabled us to create here” says Rich. “Another integral part to the line-up is Matt’s brother and fellow shareholder, Ben Jones, who has brought some solid ideas and great product knowledge to the table over the years” adds Rich.
Like any new business starting up, the fledgling owners of course came across teething problems on opening; “I remember the first 6 months being very quiet” recalls Matt, “but we stuck to our guns with complete faith in the music and atmosphere we were creating whilst others around us were telling us to ‘change the music’ or ‘become a pre-bar to a nightclub’ alongside many other pearls of wisdom. We are the same bar today with the same quality of offering as what we opened with ten years ago. That’s the success.”
Rich says “it was probably a year or so before we saw the real impact the bar was having, but since then it has developed an incredible following and has continued to improve year upon year. Considering the time we opened, with the uncertainty in the industry, we could not be prouder what we have achieved with this little rock bar in the past decade”.
As the 10th Anniversary approaches, the guys at The Shed have dedicated an entire weekend (Friday 30th Nov & Sat 1st Dec) to celebrate it with drink offers and a special guest DJ to boot.
As their slogan proudly reads “Let the good times roll” …on and on.
